first_imgJoey Barton hopes Burnley can take inspiration from this season’s Premier League new boys when they return to the top flight next season. Sean Dyche’s Clarets secured promotion from the Championship on Monday, with victory over QPR, just 12 months after dropping out of the division. But Burnley’s relegation rivals from last season are now Premier League champions, while this season’s new arrivals Watford and Bournemouth have comfortably secured their place in the league. After Leicester’s incredible title victory, Burnley are 2000/1 to lift next year’s Premier League trophy.Barton told Drivetime: “That’s the same price as Kim Kardashian to be the next US president!“We just want to consolidate, that will be the aim of any side going up.“Leicester is a phenomenal story, everyone’s still in shock it’s actually happened. They’ve totally deserved it.“Bournemouth have showed you can now go from the Championship into the Premier League.“If you are well organised, recruit smartly and do the right things, there’s that many big clubs that have been badly run in the last few years and they can be picked off. There’s no God-given right to be there.“It’d be very, very difficult for a club the size of Burnley to go into the Premier League and win it, but Leicester have shown if you do things correctly you just never know.”Despite securing promotion, Burnley are yet to seal the title. On the final day, the Clarets travel to already-relegated Charlton while Middlesbrough and Brighton battle it out for the other automatic promotion spot. The 33-year-old former Newcastle and Manchester City midfielder was a free agent at the start of this season having left QPR. He signed for Sean Dyche on a one-year deal at the end of August, going on to make 39 appearances, scoring three goals as the Lancashire side went on an incredible unbeaten run since the turn of the year.Barton continued: “It was a great environment and when I met the gaffer, the thing that jumped off the page for me was you could understand the environment he’s created.“For me to go in there, it was just a platform to add what I can bring to the football club, chipping in with a fantastic group.“After a couple of training sessions, I was fairly confident we had more than enough to get out of the division and we’ve proved so. I still believe we are the best in the division and we need to show that by getting a result at Charlton on Saturday.”As Barton’s current contract is set to run out, the one-time England international is confident he will remain at Turf Moor to help them retain their Premier League status next term. Barton added: “I’ve spoken to the club and they offered me a contract six to eight weeks ago. “For me, at this stage it’s not about finances – it’s about where I see myself.“I didn’t want to negotiate because we’ve had a title to win and that’s been the main aim. I didn’t want anything to come between that.“Once the dust has settled – we still hope to win the title – there will be plenty of time to sit down and get that sorted.“The club know where I am on it. I’m absolutely delighted with the season I’ve had, delighted with my team-mates, really humbled to be a part of it and hopefully we can sort something out and make it continue in the Premier League.”Joey Barton joined Adrian Durham and Darren Gough on Drivetime – listen to the interview in full, above.last_img read more
