first_img Tweet Share Share LocalNews Edward Oliver Highway to be officially commissioned on Friday by: – April 19, 2012 Sharecenter_img Sharing is caring! 176 Views   one comment Section of the road under the Canefield Cliffs during construction works in 2011The Roosevelt Skerrit led Administration will on Friday officially commission the rehabilitated West Coast Road Project which will be renamed the “Edward Oliver Highway”.The contract for the construction of approximately 44.877 km road was officially signed on October 9th 2009 with a projected completion time frame of 23 months; however the official ground breaking ceremony for the commencement of the project took place on 26th February, 2010.The highway was rehabilitated under the West Coast Road Development Project by the China Railway 17th Bureau Group Corporation Limited; a subsidiary company of China Railway, at a cost of EC$ 100 million. The Prime Minister announced at the official opening of the Dominica China Friendship Bridge (DC Bridge) which was part of the West Coast Rehabilitation Project, on February 1st, 2012 that the highway will be renamed in recognition of Mr. Leblanc’s contribution to Dominica particularly as the road was constructed during his administration. He told the Next Level Radio Program on Tuesday evening that he feels “personally gratified” that the highway will be renamed after someone who has contributed to Dominica’s development. “This is a major piece of infrastructure and that road will be named after the former chief minister, former premier, father of the nation and leader of the Labour Party. He is the one who constructed the road in the first place and we are very happy that after so many years something of significance, that this very important name E. O. Leblanc can be placed on it and I believe that there’s no other edifice or road that could set aside the West Coast Road”.Mr. Skerrit also announced that the Vieille Case Primary School will in September of this year also be renamed in Mr. Leblanc’s honour.“That will be done ahead of the new school year in September so that our children and people do not forget people who have made real and tangible contributions to our development”. He also commended Mr. R. O. P Armour who was the minister of works at the time when the road was constructed as well as the current Minister of Public Works Rayburn Blackmoore.“We have to give tremendous praise to Minister Blackmoore he has really marshaled the troops and taken ownership of the process and really ensured that the work was done properly. He continuously kept the people informed on the progress of the work a million times or more and was very visible at every stage”. The project included the following;• Rehabilitation of some 45.115 km of main road from Hanover Street in Roseau to Borough’s Square in Portsmouth.• The construction of a 66.94m long by 10.5m wide two-lane bridge including sidewalks from Hanover Street to Elliot Avenue• The construction of a large boxed culvert structure and re-alignment of the existing s-bend at Woodbridge Bay with a much improved alignment• Shifting of the existing road under the Canefield Cliff further westward towards the existing sea defence wall• Re-alignment of the s-bend approaching the village of Tarreau from the south with a much improved straighter alignment• Construction of over 1.6km of sea-defence protections at Tarreau and CoulibistrieConstruction of a new large boxed-culvert on approaching Picard to reinstate this failed section of road. The West Coast Road project is one of the four pillar projects agreed to between the Dominica government and the People’s Republic of China as well as the State House project and the Dominica State College. The ceremony will take place in Mahaut from 2:30pm on Friday.Dominica Vibes Newslast_img read more
