first_imgThe bullpen the Dodgers started last season with was not the same as the one that finished the season. Veteran Joe Blanton emerged as the main setup man. Grant Dayton started the season in Double-A but finished it as Dave Roberts’ top left-handed option. The one constant through it all was Kenley Jansen, who solidified his standing as one of baseball’s best closers by converting a career-high 47 saves and posting a 1.83 ERA and 0.67 WHIP (the lowest for any pitcher who threw more than 60 innings last season) then adding a stellar postseason. The Dodgers relied on their bullpen as much as any contender in baseball last year (thanks to an injury-riddled starting rotation that made five-inning starts the norm). Roberts made a major-league record 606 pitching changes.HOW IT LOOKS RIGHT NOWThe Dodgers took a surprising step toward building a strong bullpen again when they got Jansen to sign a five-year, $80 million contract. Jansen nearly left for Washington (or Miami) as a free agent. With their closer in place, the Dodgers still have some work to do to finish assembling next year’s parts. Blanton is currently an unsigned free agent. But Dayton, Pedro Baez, Josh Fields, Chris Hatcher and Luis Avilan all return and Vidal Nuno was added in a trade with the Mariners. And the front office will no doubt continue its opportunistic approach to collecting bullpen options with other unsigned free agents (see below).THE NEXT LAYER Spillover from the Dodgers’ starting pitch depth could find its way into the relief corps (Alex Wood, Ross Stripling or forgotten man Carlos Frias, for example). In the minors, the Dodgers’ system is well-stocked with starting pitching prospects. Some of them (like Chase De Jong or Trevor Oaks) could surface in relief roles if circumstances warrant. Minor-league relievers Josh Ravin and Jacob Rhame could find their way to Los Angeles from Oklahoma City at some point.MOVES THEY COULD MAKEBlanton still remains a solid candidate to return. He was better than you probably realize last season (a 2.48 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in a team-high 75 appearances). A variety pack of veteran relievers remain on the free-agent market along with Blanton – Sergio Romo, Joe Smith, David Hernandez, Tommy Hunter, Fernando Salas, Jerry Blevins, etc. Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorcenter_img As the Dodgers get closer to the first workout of spring training on Feb. 16, we are providing a breakdown of how they stand with their roster.
