BEAUMONT, TEXAS – It will be a Louisiana battle in Beaumont, Texas, on Sunday when the No. 3-seeded Northwestern State Lady Demons battle the top-seeded No. 1 McNeese Cowgirls at the Beaumont Tennis Municipal Center. The two will meet in the tournament final Sunday at 2 p.m. CT. No 1 McNeese 4, No. 4 Sam Houston State 2 (Box Score)In a grueling match, McNeese was able to dig up just enough on the singles side to send the Cowgirls to the tournament championship for the first time since 2004. In doubles play, the Cowgirls were able to breeze past Sam Houston, winning at lines three and one in 30 minutes. Charoline Erlandsson and Phonexay Chitdara earned the 6-2 win at the bottom line for the Cowgirls with Sarah Jurakova and Hannah Brett winning at the top flight to give McNeese the 1-0 lead into singles. The singles matches was a different story as the Bearkats put the pressure on the top-seeded team quick. Sam Houston won five of the first six singles sets, but McNeese pushed back, sending four matches to three sets. The Cowgirls went up 3-0 as Marija Mastilovic won at line four 6-2, 0-6, 6-4, and line five with Charoline Erlandsson earning a 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 match. Sam Houston brought the match within a point as Sahaja Yamalapalli won 7-5, 7-6 at the No. 2 line, and Mila Milanovic was able to hold Chitdara off from coming back down 5-1 in the third set, taking the match 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. The Bearkats’ Khee Yen Wee, pushing through a cramp that forced a medical timeout late in the third set, fell 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 3 line against Brett. The Cowgirls squeezed out a 4-2 win over No. 4 Sam Houston State while the Lady Demons battled to the very last set to score a 4-3 victory over the two-time defending champion, No. 2 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. It was all down to Southland Player of the Year Polina Mutel at the No. 1 line against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Hortense Boscher in the third set with the team match tied at 3-3. Mutel had taken the first set 6-3 but fell 4-6 in the second. They were the only ones who needed all three set. Mutel never let Boscher get within a point in the third, taking the set 6-3. The Lady Demons garnered the doubles point after winning at lines two and three. Corpus Christi collected three-straight singles points with Caroline Bulatovic, Luna Dormet and Louise Trigona tallying wins at lines six, three and four, respectively. Polina Ivanova defeated Jelena Dzinic at the No. 2 flight 6-4, 7-6 to bring the match within one before Judit Castillo put away her match at No. 5 in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
